Ever wondered what’s in half the products we put on our own bodies? Ever wondered what’s in the products we put on our kids?
Here is a simple list of ingredients in a popular product that most people buy for their kids to give them a bubble bath in.
• Water
• Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate (foamer)
• Sodium Laureth Sulfate (foamer)
• Cocoamide DEA (foam stabilizer, liquid thickener)
• Aloe Barbadensis Gel (anti-irritant, thickener)
• Hydroxyethylcellulose (liquid thickener, foam stabilizer)
• Fragrance (esthetic, masking)
• Quaternium-15 (preservative)
• Tetrasodium EDTA (preservative, mfg. aid)
• D&C Red 33 (esthetic, dispensing aid)
• FD&C Blue (esthetic, dispensing aid)
WHAT? Over half the products listed in that “popular” bubble bath, I can not even pronounce. So why are we eager to pour this in a tub of water that our own children sit in for 10-35 minutes? I think I will pass.
You know, of all the things on this planet that I have trouble understanding, it’s why in the hell do companies need to color their products with harmful chemical colorings. I really don’t care if I am washing my hair with clear shampoo, red shampoo or even a dark brown color shampoo. It’s mainly because the American public expects for their “strawberry” scented shampoo to be red or pink, right? Why? Just because it is strawberry or grape scented (hopefully it’s a natural scent) doesn’t mean it needs to be the color of the fruit. Here is a better way to enjoy a bubble bath, for both you and your child. The simple answer is, MAKE IT YOURSELF, or read the ingredients list before buying it. If you can’t pronounce the products in the container, don’t waster your money on it and most certainly, don’t sit your children in a water bath of it.
Homemade Bubble Bath:
1 quart (4 cups) distilled water
1 (4 oz) bar castile soap (grated or flaked)
3 ounces liquid glycerin
Mix together the water, soap flakes and liquid glycerin. This basic bubble bath can be enhanced by adding a few drops of essential oils of your liking. If you want to experiment with different essential oils with this recipe, I suggest, picking up some literature on essential oils and educating yourself before adding them to your products. Essential oils can be hazardous at certain levels and the contraindications on some may react with your skin type or your child’s.
