Make a Bust Candle for the Holidays
Friday, December 19th, 2008
My friends and have been pouring wax into just about anything since we were kids to make candles out of them. We used to use cookie cutters and even my mom’s silicone baking wear. All you need is a mold of the original and add some wax and a wick, allow to dry and there is a candle. So simple.
With that know technique, you can make a candle of a bust of just about anyone. Here is how it’s made.
Materials needed:
Plaster bust (you can find this at discount stores or even tag sales)
Clear sealant
Drill
Nail
Container that double the size of the bust
Popsicle Stick
Liquid Rubber (available at craft stores everywhere)
Measuring cups
Sharp knife
Wick
Beeswax
Double boiler
Scissors
What to do:
Spray the bust with clear sealant to make sure the bust won’t allow air to slip into any air pockets. Place the bust in the container that is double its size and mix the liquid rubber according to how the package directs.
Pour the liquid rubber in on top if the bust and allow to dry for about 5 hours or even over night. Using the sharp knife, cut down the sides of the rubber mild and remove the bust from the mold.
Place the rubber mold back into the container where your originally poured the wet rubber mixture. Place the wick, tied around the popsicle stick and lay across the top if the rubber mold as to hold it into place.
Meanwhile, place the measuring cup inside a boiling pan of water over the stove and place the beeswax inside the measuring cup and allow to melt completely. Once melted pout into the rubber mold and allow to cool at room temperature completely.
If the top is caved in pour on top more wax. Trim the wick and give as gifts or place several throughout your own home or bathroom.
