Mixing Up your own Natural Cleaners

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Fumes from everyday household cleaners may make your house “clean”, so to speak, but at what level are you putting your own health and your family and pet’s health at risk? With common products within your own cabinet, you can still get your house clean without the risk of health and lung issues later on. Here are some common ingredients for making all-natural cleaners. Most you have on hand right now.

• 1/2 cup baking soda + 2 tbs. castile soap= Bathroom Cleaner (with a bit of elbow grease and these products, you can take almost anything off your tub, shower and even floor and cabinets)

• Used coffee grinds= Lawn Fertilizer

• 1 cup white vinegar + 1 cup baking soda + 1 kettle of boiling water= An Awesome Drain Opener (pour in baking soda into the drain, add the vinegar and wait 30 minutes, follow by flushing with boiling water)

• 1/4 cup vegetable oil + 1/2 cup lemon juice= Furniture Polish

• 1 cup white vinegar + 1 gallon of water= Glass Cleaner (mix together in a spray-top bottle)

• Brewer’s yeast=Flea Repellent (click here to find out more)

• Vitamin B= Flea Repellent (click here to find out more)

• Cinnamon Leaves = Whole Cloves= Air Freshener (simmer on the stove with water on medium-low heat)

Changing your cleaning routine and cleaning products to include one or more of these ingredients can significantly reduce your families and your own risk of inhaling harmful fumes that make cause other issues later, such as asthma, or even skin irritations. Your pet will thank you as well for changing their chemical exposure to a greener solution.

Cleanser and Moisturizer Using Rose Water

Monday, January 28th, 2008

rose.jpg1. For the cleanser you will need:

This recipe is based on the original Galen’s Cold Cream, which is thousands of years old of course. This rich cream sets firm, but liquefies on contact with the natural warmth of the skin. Galen’s Cold Cream is a good cleaning cream for mature, sensitive and dry skins, with the benefit of containing rose essential oil.

• 1/7 oz (6g) of beeswax pellets
• 2 heat-resistant glass bowls
• A pan of hot water
• 4 fl oz. (120 ml) of sweet almond oil
• 2 1/4 fl oz. (60 ml) of rose water
• A hand whisk or electric beater with a low setting
• 10 drops of rose absolute
• A large glass jar

1. Melt the beeswax pellets, in one of the glass bowls, placed inside a pan of hot water over a gentle heat. Stir in the sweet almond oil and warm thoroughly.

2. Heat the rose water in the other bowl, until the contents of both bowls are throughly warmed.

3. Now add the rose water, drop by drop, into the oils, beating steadily all the time while adding. It will be just like making mayonnaise, continuing to stir while adding the water to the oil so it combines and doesn’t seperate.

4. Once all the flower water has been beaten into the oils, remove the pan from the heat, stirring until the mixture has cooled. Then add the rose absolute, mixing it in thoroughly, and pour into the glass jar.

1. For the cleanser you will need:

Here is a recipe for a rich face cream. It is particularly suitable if the face has been exposed to the drying effects of cold, wind, rain, sun or central heating and the skin has become very dry and perhaps a little red or flaky. The recipe contains both essentialand base oils that have a deeply moisturizing effect on the skin.

• 1/9 oz. (4g)
• 2 heat-resistant glass bowls
• A pan of hot water
• 3/4 oz (20g) cocoa butter
• 3 tsp. (15ml) each of sweet almond and jojoba oils
• 2 tsp. (10ml) of rosehip-seed oil
• A hand whisk or electric heather with a low setting
• 2 tsp. (10 ml) of rose water
• 1 tsp. (5 ml) of glycerine
• 8 drops of rose otto and frankincense
• 4 drops each of geranium and carrot seed
• A large glass jar

1. Melt the beeswax in one of the glass bowls, placed inside a pan of hot water over a gently heat. Add the cocoa butter, the sweet almond and jojoba oils, and the rosehip-seed oil, beating the mixture steadily.

2. In the other bowl heat the rose water, and glycerine until the contents of both bowls are the same temperature and throughly warmed through.

3. Now add the rose-water mixture, drop by drop, into the oils, beating steadily all the time, same as above.

4. Remove the pan from the heat and stir until the mixture cools. Mix in throughly the rose otto and frankincense, the geranium and carrot seed. Pour into the glass jar.
