Avon® Naturals™ not so “Natural”
Wednesday, April 9th, 2008
I have been selling Avon now for about 6 months. Thinking, as anyone who isn’t that well educated on ingredients, assumed what I was selling in the “Naturals” line was indeed, well, natural of course. It isn’t. I did some research on the ingredients and found out that most of the products that Avon sells aren’t all that great for your body.
Take for instance the, NATURALS Peach Antibacterial Liquid Soap. Most soap companies that mass-market their products use a chemical that is referred to in the “organic” world as TOXIC. This chemical is, sodium laureth sulfate, or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), it’s an inexpensive and very effective foamer that most companies use to help their product foam up when used or make a foam more effective in the line of bubbles. Most consumers expect to see foam in their hands when they go to wash their dirty fingertips. And most consumers expect to see foam when they go to scrub their heads, but what exactly are they getting besides foam?
Some evidence and research suggest that SLES can also cause irritation after extended exposure. Also, is potentially harmful to skin and hair. Cleans by corrosion. Dries skin by stripping the protective lipids from the surface so it can’t effectively regulate moisture. It has also been linked with some cancers and large amounts of these known carcinogens found in sodium laurly sulfate, another form of SLS are absorbed through the skin into the body.
The bottom line on this, is make sure you read labels and see if anything in your current product of new product you are wanting to try doesn’t contain any questionable ingredients. And don’t assume that if a product says “natural” or “all-natural”, that it must be.
Even though I enjoy some products that Avon sells, I have choosen to no longer use the body or make up products they sell. If I can’t pronounce the ingredients or recognize the ingredients it doesn’t go on my body.
