Vaporized Room Scents

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

diffuser.jpgPromote a specific mood inside your home by using a purchased diffuser (a glass or ceramic container and votive candle) to disperse the scent of an essntial oil. Follow the diffuser’s instructions. If you do not have a diffuser, simply add a few drops of eential oil to a pan of water and heat it on the stovetop. Try the following basic combinations, or experiment with your own blends.

Relaxing Blend:

4 drops bergamont essential oil
3 drops lavender essential oil
1 drop frankincese essential oil
1-2 drops neroli essential oil

Energizing Blend:

5 drops peppermint essential oil
3 drops geranium essential oil
1 drop eucalyptus essential oil
1 drop wintergreen essential oil

Cleansing Blend:

2 drops lemon essential oil
1 drop thyme essential oil
4 drops geranium essential oil
2 drops manderin essential oil

Place the essential oils into the glass bowl or diffuser of your choosing or in the pan if doing it on the stovetop. Light the candle to heat the oils and release the scent through the room. Use for 5 to 15 minutes at a time. If you use a tealight candle, when the candle burns out the oils should be gone as well. Watch your water, for the oils will burn if the water has evaporated before the candle burns out compeletely. (Source: Herb Companion 2007)

WAX AND BUBBLES PRODUCT SHOWCASE:

bullfrog-light-comp.jpgThe Bullfrog Candle got its start nearly three decades ago, when the Stewart children asked for help with a candle- making school project. The children moved on to other interests while Bill continued to experiment with candles of his own design. After many years, the secret candle glow was perfected by using the highest quality wax and “just a little magic”.

In 1981, candle-making became a vocation instead of a hobby, and the company was named for the noisy bullfrogs at the adjacent Shiawassee Flats Game Refuge. Since then, the company has created hundreds of thousands of glowing candles that have become the trademark of Bullfrog Light Co. Each candle is hand-crafted from start to finish in Charlevoix, Michigan, where the growing business was relocated in 1985.

Making Your Own Perfume

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

perfume2.jpg

To make a perfume blend, choose three to five oils that you like the smell of. Include at least one each top, middle and base note to add to this mixture. You will also need a clean one-ounce bottle with a lid for each blended mixture you make. Also an eyedropper. Be sure and use one that is clean, and have one for each oil you add to your blend so not to mix the smells. You will need a coffee filter and cut it into strips to test your blend.

Using a clean eyedropper, begin by dropping two drops of each of your oils into on of the one-ounce bottles. To repvent crossing the scents, use those seperate eye droppers. Some essential oils come in a dropper top so to make it easier for dispensing. Cap the bottle. shake slowly. Wait a few minutes an uncap the bottle and inhale the scent. Place a drop on the coffee filter strip and inhale. If it is missing more of a scent then another, add a few drops of the essential oil that is missing.

Continue adding the essential oils, drop by drop, until you have a scent you like. Once you have the oil blend you like, you will need to add 15 drops of your oil blend to one ounce of vodka. Add these together in a glass bottle and shake well. You will need to let your perfume combinatio If you would like, you can add the oil blend to a spray top bottle to make it easier to use.

Make Your Own Room Scent

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

spray1.jpg

With the chemicals that are in the room sprays on the market currently, making your own with the ingredients you know are healthier and contain no lung harming products. You can experiment with your own blend of oils and see what works best for you or your family’s smell. Essential oils are important in everyone’s sense of smell. Finding what scent is best for you, is a task that will take you on a great journey that will take your senses to places they have never been. Once you find that perfect scent, make a room scent or spray and use it whenever you need to refresh your house or car. Here’s how:

Cleansing Room Scent For Your Home or Car®™ BeeSpa Naturals

2 cups distilled water
20 drops lemon essential oil
10 drops thyme essential oil
40 drops geranium essential oil
20 drops manderin essential oil
20 drops grapefruit essential oil

Place distilled water in a pot and bring to a boil over high heat. Meanwhile, place essential oils in an aluminum or glass spray bottle. After distilled water begins boiling, pour, very carefully, using a funnel into the bottle with the essential oils. Shake vigourously for several minutes. Place mixture in a dark environment till it has cooled down quite a bit. Once it is cool, spray in several locations throughout your home. To see a drastic scent change in your home or car, spray everyday for at least a week. Be sure and shake several times before use each time.

This recipe can even be used as a perfume on the body. Try it out and experiment with different essential oils till you find one that smells great on your skin. You may find that making your perfume or cologne is a lot easier than buying it at one of the name-brand stores. Just have fun with it.

Alternatives to Citronella

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Keeping bugs at bay with citronella candles is simple and effective, but some of us aren’t all that fond of the smell. I don’t mind the smell much at all until the candle is lit - then it just puts me right off. We still use them, but I’ve started to search for some scent alternatives to add to my outdoor candles that will keep the bugs away and not cause me to wrinkle my nose.

So far, there are a few scents that are promising. Alone or in combinations, try these essential oils in your outdoor candles:

  • rosemary
  • lemongrass
  • clary sage
  • eucalyptus
  • thyme
  • clove
  • peppermint

Most fruity or flowery scents will actually attract bugs, with the possible exception of lavender. Lavender essential oil can be combined with one of the above fragrances and still be effective. Citronella oil can also be combined with other scents, but generally the citronella will overpower whatever you add to it.

Here’s to a mosquito-free summer!
