Using Herbs for What Ails You

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

herbs.jpgIt is possible to make a personalized herbal compress according to your own or someone else’s health needs. Although the proper technique and expertise is required. And though it is recommended to use as many ingredients as possible for best results and to create a richer scent, the herbs listed below can offer the following specific benefits and should be used in abundance in a compress designed to address that particular need. Lymphatic drainage, swelling and imflammation can all be treated with an herbal compress. However, never use one herb only, always try to maintain a balance between several herbs at once:

• Sweet basil: Headaches

• Turmeric: Stomach Discomfort

• Plai: Strains, sprains, and muscular pain

• Nutmeg: Joint pains

• Kaffir Lime: Sore muscles and breathing problems

• Ginger: Boosting circulation

• Galangal: Skin disease

• Lemongrass: Colic and fatigue

• Camphor: Spasms, cramps and muscle pain

Taking any of these herbs together to treat specific ailments is easy. Choose a few that you are needing to treat certain soreness or even cramps. Wrap those choosen herbs in cheese cloth and tie off with twine. If you do a dry compress, be sure and soak the herbs for a few hours or they will be to stiff to work with inside the cheese cloth. A warm, wet compress is the best for drainage.

bathroom.jpg• Aromatic Herbal Bath: Add 10 to 15 drops of essential oil to your drawn bath water. For relaxation try some lavender or ylang ylang. For skin irritation try tea tree and lavender together. Stir the water throughly after adding the essential woll before getting into the bath.

• Simple foot and hand soak: Add 5 to 7 drops of essential oil to a bowl or basin of warm water. Soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Use the same essential oil mix as above or do an online search for what oils you should use for what condition.

• Herbal Compress: To treat a headache or skin irritation, add 5 to 8 drops of essential oil to 2 cups of hot or cold water. Stir to disperse the oils evenly. Brielfy soak a cotton cloth in the water, wring out the cloth when necessary, then place it on the skin in the needed area on your body or someone else’s body. Repeat every 15 minutes for up to one hour. (Source: Aromatherapy 101)
