Furniture Wax and Polishes? Are They a Good Thing?

Most commercial furniture polishes contain chemicals that don’t need to be going on your wood furniture in the first place and many contain products that are under pressure and that are aerosol that can deplete the ozone layer. With the ingredients comes the risk of inhaling these chemicals and effecting you and your families health overall. What’s more is your furniture doesn’t need all those chemicals to begin with. You just want to put a fine wax coat on the furniture to protect over time, not lay on chemicals that are doing more harm than good. To overcome this hazard the best thing you can do for yourself, your pets and family and your furniture is to make you own furniture polish or wax. Here’s how:
• For polished furniture that has already been coated with a layer of polish:
What you will need:
1. Olive oil
2. Lemon juice
3. Lint free or 100% cotton cloth
4. Soft toothbrush
What you will need to do:
Mix 2 cups of the olive oil and 1 cup of the lemon juice in a bowl. Next dip the lint free cloth into the mixture and rub into the wood. Always toward the direction of the grain. Use the soft toothbrush to get into tight places on the furniture, such as a pie rack or buffet that has scroll work or fine detailing along the wood. Rub with a new, clean cloth until wood shines and gives off its original luster.
For furniture that is unfinished and doesn’t have a shine coat already applied:
What you will need:
1. 1 cup sweet oil
2. 1 tsp. lemon juice
3. Lint free cloth
What you will need to do:
Dissolve the lemon juice and sweet oil together. Apply a small amount of the mixture onto a soft, lint-free cloth. Rub mixture into wood until all residue has soaked in. Rub in the direction of the grain of the wood. Buff the furniture with a clean, dry cloth to make furniture shine. Reapply the mixture or make more till the wood will come to a shine.
