When I was a kid growing up in the country in Arkansas, my sister, who by the way is just 15 months older than me, would go on a hunt to find what we called, “makeup rocks”. These were actually just slate rocks that had pockets of crushed slate or other rocks in the missing slate. We would dampen out fingers and rub the color onto our faces as if we were wearing fancy makeup to a party. In that day and age mineral makeup was almost unheard of. Now it’s a household name.

Mineral makeup is basically made up of mica, iron oxides, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and at times may contain bismuth oxychloride. All of these ingredients are then pulverized into a fine powder which then is blended to create different colors and different color effects on your face. Some of the mineral makeup brands even contain a sun protective addition that makes them even better to wear daily.

Most mineral makeup brands try to stray away from using any type of artificial colorings and therefore they gain the softer more radiant skin illusion with an ingredient called mica. Which allows the skin to appear more sheen and uniform.

Mineral makeup is super easy to apply and with a brush called the kabuki brush, anyone can achieve that younger, lightly sun-kissed glow from the makeup products just as you would with your conventional makeup. The mineral makeup is interchangeable as far as colors, and you can even mix brands to find the perfect makeup blend for your skin tone.
