Pros and Cons of Soap and Candle Making Kits
You’ve probably seen many soap and candle making kits resting on the shelves of craft or department stores. They’re usually nestled in with the jewelry and beading kits, and marketed to young girls. My son was looking for a soap kit a few months back, wanting to have his own supplies instead of having to ask Mom every time he wanted to play around with soaping. We couldn’t find one that wasn’t flowery or girly, but the search continues!
Kits are a terrific way to get started in these kinds of crafts. There are, of course, pros and cons to using the kits and the supplies they contain. On the pro side, you’ll have step by step instructions to complete the project, and when you’re finished you’ll be able to keep the molds to use again and again. There will likely be some scent and colour left over as well.
The biggest drawback to soap and candle making kits is that they limit your creativity and experience. Purchasing supplies on your own and having a stash of them to choose from when the crafting bug hits is far less limiting! With a kit, you basically have only one type of candle or soap you can make. Also, the supplies included in kits tend to be of a lesser quality than you could get if purchasing them separately. You’ll have little control over what ingredients are in the soap or wax base, or in the additives you’ll be using.
All things considered, however, a kit can make a lot of sense. It gives you a taste of the craft itself, and if you find it’s not something you enjoy you haven’t spent a fortune to figure it out. If you find you do enjoy it, however, spend some time browsing the internet and pick up a good book or two on the topic, and learn about all the different ways you can play with the craft and make candles and soap that are truly unique!
