Protect your delicate skin with homemade products
African American skin tends to dry out faster than Caucasian skin and along with that comes the “ashing” of the elbows, the face, the knees, and the feet. African American skin is prone to drying out because of the lack of moisture and it’s especially tougher during the summer months when the sun can literally dry out the skin.
Showering during these hotter months is not any better because warm to hot water can wash away delicate moisture and oils from the skin. To stay on top of the non-drying effects of the skin here are a few homemade remedies that can be applied to the skin everyday. These recipes can be used on Caucasian skin as well.
African Shea Butter
2 oz. shea butter
8 drops orange essential oil
5 drops lemon essential oil
3 drops bergamot essential oil
3 drops tangerine essential oil
2 drops ylang ylang essential oil
1 drop geranium essential oil
Mix together the Shea butter that has been melted in the microwave and the oils. Continue to stir until the mixture hardens once more. Apply to elbows, feet and even face or where dry. If you have an allergy to any of these oils mentioned in this recipe then it can be left out of the mix.
African Safari Facial Mist
2 oz. distilled water
12 drops sweet orange essential oil
8 drops frankincense essential oil
4 drops ylang ylang essential oil
4 drops rosemary essential oil
2 drops tangerine essential oil
Mix together in a spray bottle and shake well before using. To use spray entire face and neck when skin feels a bit chapped or dried out.
