Shower Shock Caffeine Soap
Thanks to Heather for tipping me off on this one! Shower Shock Caffeinated Soap claims to be an extra little pick-me-up in your morning shower. Scented with peppermint and containing “caffeine anhydrous,” this is one bar of soap that I have GOT to try! They say that the caffeine is actually absorbed into your skin while you shower.
Not being one to know my caffeine chemistry, I looked up caffeine anhydrous to see exactly what this stuff is. It’s basically pure caffeine in powdered form, and it’s widely available in capsules as an over-the counter stimulant. Shower Shock combines this with pure glycerine soap base and peppermint oil. So, with a bit of experimenting, I don’t think it would be too difficult to try making this one at home. I’m sure upcoming craft shows will have plenty of copycats.
I really have no idea if the caffeine can be absorbed, however. Everything I’ve read suggests that it should be taken in pill form, and you have to consider the amount of time the soap will actually be on your body before rinsing it off. Each “serving” of the soap has the caffeine equivalent of two cups of coffee, but the makers of the soaps admit that they haven’t tested it, according to this CNN transcript. And in case a bar of soap isn’t your thing, there’s also a handy shower gel version.

Hmm…since coffee and other warm caffeinated drinks tend to put me to sleep, perhaps this is the jolt I need in the mornings (I’ll take the shower gel)!
Interesting new product…keep us posted if you decide to make your own version

I love that you picked up on this article. I just wrote my weekly humor column on it over at: http://www.thecheers.org/article_2291_One-More-Cup-of-Coffee-Before-I-Go.html
Looking forward to more of your posts.

Let me know if this stuff works. I could really use it in the mornings. Right now I pretty much sleep through my shower and sometimes my drive to work (not literally, of course).

Loved your column, Mark! Thanks for sharing the link.
I will definitely let everyone know if it works, and if I can come up with my own recipe.
